Liquid Rubber General FAQ

General Product Knowledge & Support FAQ

Get the most out of your Liquid Rubber project. This guide covers universal technical specifications, storage, and general application guidelines that apply across all our product lines.

Product Selection & Priming

  • How do I choose the right product? Most projects require a system: a cleaner, a primer, reinforcement tape, and a sealant. For specific needs, check out our Application Guides or contact our technical support team.
  • Do I really need a primer? Use of an appropriate primer increases bond strength and may provide a moisture vapor barrier. It is critical for decks, ponds, and non-porous materials like EPDM.
    • EPDM & TPO Primer: Specifically designed for EPDM and TPO surfaces.
    • Multipurpose Primer: Recommended for Wood, Concrete, Metal, Vinyl, Fiberglass, HDPE, and most other materials.
  • Can I apply a colored coating over a black bitumen sealant? No. These are not compatible chemistries. Bitumen will bleed through, and the topcoat may delaminate or crack due to expansion and contraction.

Universal Application Guidelines

  • What are the ideal application temperatures? Apply in temperatures consistently above 10°C (50°F) and relative humidity below 80%. Ensure the surface is at least 5 degrees above the dew point. Do not apply if rain is forecasted within 24 hours.
  • How do I handle "Coats" vs. "Coverage"? Coverage rates account for all "coats". Divide the total square footage by the coverage rate and apply that total volume in as many even coats as needed until all material is used.
  • Can I thin the products? We strongly discourage thinning as it increases shrink back and the potential for cracking. If necessary for water-based coatings, use distilled water only (max 5% by volume). Never thin silicone products.
  • Are these safe for indoor use? Yes. Liquid Rubber products are water-based, solvent-free, and ultra-low to no-VOC. Ventilation is always important, but you do not need a special breathing apparatus.

Advanced Technical Specifications (Spray Application)

If you are using industrial spray equipment, your unit must be capable of spraying an elastomeric coating with Brookfield CPs = 12-15,000. Ensure it meets these minimum requirements:

Coating Type GPM Pressure Tip Size
Acrylics/Polyurethanes/NeoPond 1.0 - 1.5 1500 psi .027 - .035
Bitumen (Black Coatings) 4.0 4000 psi .025 - .035
Silicone 1.0 - 2.0 7000 psi .027 - .040

Storage & Maintenance

  • What is the shelf life? Properly stored, products should be good for 1-2 years. Store in a cool, dry place above 5°C (41°F). **Do not allow products to freeze**.
  • How do I clean my tools? Use soap and water for water-based products. Use mineral spirits for bitumen-based products.
  • Can I use these on a boat? You can use Polyurethane Deck Coating or Cool Foot on boat decks. We do **not** have a product suitable for boat hulls or the bottom of the boat.
