Metal Roof & Quonset Hut Waterproofing FAQ
Protect your investment with Liquid Rubber. From agricultural Quonset huts to residential standing seam metal roofs, our coatings stop leaks, prevent rust, and extend the life of your metal structure.
Product Selection & Planning
-
Which product is best for my metal roof?
- For colors and high elasticity: Liquid Rubber Color Roof Sealant.
- For direct-to-rust application: MetalSafe Sealant.
- For a premium one-coat solution: Liquid Rubber Silicone Roof Coating.
-
How do I calculate coverage for corrugated metal? Metal roofs have more surface area than their flat "footprint."
- Low Slope (3/12 or less): 1 gal per 15 sq ft (1.4 sq/m).
- Pitched (>3/12): 1 gal per 30 sq ft (2.8 sq/m).
- Important: Add 10–25% extra for corrugation and "peak-to-valley" depth. If you "stretched" a corrugated sheet flat, it would be significantly larger than it appears.
- Do I need Seam Tape or Geo-Textile? Yes. Seams and fasteners are where 90% of metal roof leaks occur. Seam Tape is the premium, labor-saving choice for joints and vent boots.
-
Do I need a primer?
- No Rust: No primer needed for most Liquid Rubber coatings on clean metal.
- Rust Present: Use a water-based rust converter first, *unless* using MetalSafe, which is specifically designed to go over surface rust.
Preparation & Inspection
- What should I look for during my roof inspection? Check for loose or over-tightened fasteners, missing neoprene gaskets, and "backing out" screws. Look for rust scale, deteriorated weatherstripping between panel laps, and drainage issues in gutters.
- How do I clean the surface? Pressure wash to remove dirt and lichen. If oils or moss are present, use Multipurpose Cleaner. Ensure any heavy rust scale is removed with a wire brush before coating.
- Can I coat over old paint? Yes, if it is well-bonded. Use Multipurpose Primer for old acrylic or epoxy coatings. Warning: Remove oil-based or high-solvent coatings first, as they will prevent our water-based products from bonding.
Application Tips
- Can I spray apply? Yes. While most DIYers use 3/8" microfiber rollers, professionals can use airless spray units (e.g., Graco GH833). Homeowners can wrap tools in plastic bags and keep them in the fridge between coats to save money on supplies.
- Can I use a cheap bitumen coating first? No. Bitumen (black tar) is incompatible with colored topcoats. It will bleed through, ruin the aesthetics, and cause bonding failure.
