Planter Box Waterproofing FAQ
Protect your garden investments with Liquid Rubber. Our non-toxic, eco-friendly coatings provide a seamless waterproof barrier that prevents wood rot and concrete erosion, ensuring your planter boxes last for seasons to come.
Product Selection & Planning
-
Which product is best for my planter box?
- For interiors or applications not exposed to UV: Liquid Rubber Foundation Sealant.
- For UV-exposed projects or where color is desired: Liquid Rubber Color Roof Sealant.
- Do I need a primer? While primer is often skipped for the interior of planter boxes, it is highly recommended for the exterior to ensure maximum adhesion and longevity.
- How much sealant do I need? Coverage depends on the product. Example: Foundation Sealant covers 1 gallon per 15 sq ft. For a 45 sq ft surface area, you will need 3 gallons (45 ÷ 15 = 3). Apply in multiple coats until all material is used.
- Do I need Seam Tape or Geo-Textile? Yes. We recommend using Seam Tape or Geo-Textile to reinforce joints, seams, and cracks against thermal and other movement.
Surface Compatibility & Preparation
- Can I apply this to Concrete? Yes. Concrete must be fully cured, free of laitance/efflorescence, and have a moisture content under 5%. Use Concrete Etch to prepare the surface and apply Multipurpose Primer first.
-
Can I apply this to Metal or Fiberglass?
- Metal: Yes. MetalSafe or Color Roof Sealant are ideal with proper cleaning.
- Fiberglass: Yes. Scuff sand the surface, clean, and use Multipurpose Primer. A test patch is recommended due to varying fiberglass formulations.
- Can I coat over existing paint? Yes, most acrylic, polyurethane, or epoxy paints are compatible with Multipurpose Primer. However, remove oil-based or high-solvent coatings first, as they can deteriorate water-based coatings.
Expert Application Tips
- Is it safe for my plants? Yes. Once fully cured, Liquid Rubber coatings are non-toxic and solvent-free, making them safe for non-potable water features and garden beds.
- What tools do I need? Use a standard paint brush with nylon bristles or a 3/8" microfiber roller.
- How do I save my tools between coats? Wrap your brush or roller in a plastic grocery bag to slow the curing process; this allows you to reuse the tool for your next coat.
