Pond & Water Feature Waterproofing FAQ

Ponds & Water Features FAQ

Create a beautiful, leak-free aquatic environment with Liquid Rubber. Our specialized sealants are designed to be safe for fish and plants while providing a seamless, flexible membrane that adapts to structural movement.

Product Selection & Project Planning

  • Which product should I use for my pond?
    • For standard ponds and fountains: Liquid Rubber NeoPond Sealant is specifically recommended for constant submersion.
    • For applications over existing bitumen (tar) coatings: Waterproof Sealant can be used, though it requires specific application steps—please contact us for instructions.
  • Do I need a primer? Yes. Multipurpose Primer is critical for on-grade ponds to mitigate moisture vapor drive. For EPDM rubber membranes, use EPDM & TPO Primer.
  • How much sealant do I need? For NeoPond Sealant, the coverage rate is typically 1 gallon per 40 sq ft for the final thickness. Example: A 240 sq ft pond requires 6 gallons (240 ÷ 40 = 6). Apply in multiple coats until all material is used.
  • Do I need Seam Tape or Geo-Textile? Yes. Use Seam Tape or Geo-Textile over joints, seams, and pipe penetrations. For cracks wider than 1/8", pre-fill with Adhesive Caulk.

Preparation & Surface Compatibility

  • Can I apply this to Concrete, Metal, or EPDM?
    • Concrete: Must be fully cured and dry (under 5% moisture). Use Concrete Etch and Multipurpose Primer.
    • Metal/Aluminum: Yes, with proper cleaning, our coatings protect metal ponds and water features.
    • Fiberglass: Scuff sand to remove gloss, clean, and use Multipurpose Primer. A test patch is always recommended.
    • EPDM: Yes, provided you use the specialized EPDM & TPO Primer.
  • Can I coat over old paint or bitumen? You can apply over most acrylic or polyurethane paints with Multipurpose Primer. Warning: Do not apply a colored/white coating over a bitumen base; they are incompatible, and the bitumen will bleed through.

What to Expect After Application

  • Why did my NeoPond turn grey? This is normal! Introducing water can turn the sealant grey; it does not affect performance and typically fades over time.
  • Why are there soap suds in my pond? NeoPond contains a surfactant for usability and curing. Simply cycle the water to remove the suds.
  • Is it safe for fish and plants? Yes. Liquid Rubber pond products are non-toxic and solvent-free once fully cured.
  • How long must it cure before filling? We recommend a 7-14 day cure time in ideal conditions before filling.

✅ Project Checklist: Pond Essentials
