Shower Liner & Bathroom Waterproofing FAQ
Ensure a leak-proof foundation for your bathroom renovation with Liquid Rubber. Our professional-grade waterproofing system creates a seamless "tank" behind your tile, preventing mold, wood rot, and water damage for years to come.
Product Selection & Planning
- Which product do I use for a shower liner? Use Liquid Rubber Foundation Sealant. It is specifically designed to be tiled or clad over and is not intended as a final contact surface or for UV exposure.
- How much do I need? Coverage is typically 1 gallon per 20 sq ft (1.85 sq/m) for the final membrane thickness. Example: A 200 sq ft bathroom surface area requires 10 gallons of Foundation Sealant. Apply in multiple coats until all recommended material is used.
- Do I need a primer? Generally, no. However, Multipurpose Primer is required if applying to a concrete substrate or if there is a risk of moisture from behind the wall.
- Should I use Geo-Textile or Seam Tape? Yes. Use Geo-Textile or Seam Tape over cracks, joints, and pipe penetrations to reinforce against movement. For gaps wider than 1/8", pre-fill with Adhesive Caulk.
Tile Installation & Substrates
- What adhesive should I use for my tile? Use a water-based tile adhesive or a polymer-modified thin-set. In some instances, tile can be set directly into the wet Foundation Sealant or adhered using Adhesive Caulk.
- Can I install metal lathing over the coating? Yes. While puncturing the membrane is not ideal, if lathing is required for heavy tile, you must carefully seal over all staples or fasteners with Foundation Sealant to maintain the waterproof barrier.
- Is it compatible with Cement Board or HardieBoard? Yes. Liquid Rubber bonds excellently to cement board and HardieBoard. Ensure concrete surfaces are fully cured (under 5% moisture) and treated with Concrete Etch before priming.
- Can I coat over existing paint? You can apply over most acrylic or polyurethane paints using Multipurpose Primer. Ensure the old paint is well-bonded, as our coating is only as strong as what it is stuck to.
Application Expert Tips
- What tools are required? Most DIYers use standard paint brushes with nylon bristles and 3/8" microfiber rollers. Heavy industrial sprayers (like a Graco GH833) can be used for large-scale bitumen applications, though they are rarely accessible to homeowners.
- How do I save my tools between coats? Wrap your brush or roller in a plastic grocery bag to slow the curing process, allowing you to reuse the tool for your next coat.
- How long before I can tile? Ensure the membrane is fully cured and dry to the touch—typically 24–48 hours depending on humidity—before beginning tile installation.
