About Ice Melt

Ice Melt for Steps, Entryways, Driveways That Works Fast Without Wrecking Concrete or Asphalt

This isn't rock salt. Rock salt melts ice, but it also pits concrete, kills your grass, and leaves your dog licking sore paws all winter. You shouldn't have to choose between a clear driveway and a product that’s gentler on paws, and safer for the environment.

Liquid Rubber Ice Melt is a magnesium chloride formula built to melt ice fast down to -31°F (-35°C). Unlike traditional rock salt, it won't corrode or damage your surfaces in the process. Spread it on concrete, asphalt, driveways, sidewalks, steps, patios, and decks, but skip natural stone (limestone, marble, travertine) and any concrete poured in the last 12 months.

Already got 2+ inches on the ground? Shovel or plow first, then use it to finish off the stubborn layer underneath.

Liquid Rubber Ice Melt is safer for pets and vegetation than rock salt. As with any ice melt, it's always best practice to rinse your pet's paws after a walk and keep them from eating it.

How to use Ice Melt

Essential Resources for Your Project

  • How is this different from typical road salt?

That's ice salt, this isn't. Liquid Rubber Ice Melt is magnesium chloride, which melts ice at lower temperatures than ice salt, down to -31°F (-35°C), without the corrosion and pitting that ice salt leaves behind on concrete. It's also easier on your grass and your pet's paws, and there's no spreader needed. Just sprinkle it on.

  • Do I need the granular or the liquid version of Ice Melt?

Granular works for prevention and existing ice and snow. Get it down early before sleet or freezing rain, or use it to melt through snow and ice that's already on the ground. It's effective down to -31°F (-35°C) and built for bigger areas like driveways and walkways. Liquid is best for pre-treating before a storm hits, ideal for stairs, decks, and smaller high-traffic spots, and it works at an even lower temperature, down to -85°F (-65°C), plus it'll handle frost or light trace snow, but isn't meant for heavier accumulation. If you only want to pre-treat small areas or need performance in extreme cold, go liquid. If you need something that handles prevention and cleanup on larger surfaces, granular is the one.

  • Is Ice Melt safe for concrete?

Yes, on sealed and fully cured concrete. Ice Melt shouldn't be used on concrete less than 12 months old, since new concrete hasn't fully cured and is more vulnerable to chloride-based products. On sealed, cured concrete, it's gentler than ice salt and won't harm the surface when used as directed.

  • Will this damage my driveway or other surfaces?

Used as directed, it's gentler on concrete, asphalt, and pavers than rock salt. Skip natural stone (limestone, marble, travertine), bare or unsealed wood, and any concrete poured in the last 12 months. When in doubt, spot-test a small area first.

  • Will it actually work in the cold I get here?

Yes. It's formulated to keep working down to -35°C (-31°F), well past the point where rock salt stops melting ice effectively.

  • Is Ice Melt safe for my pets?

Gentler than rock salt, but it's always best practice to rinse your pet's paws after a walk and keep them from eating it directly off the ground whenever any product like this is around.
